I missed the longlist announcement, but I saw the shortlist today. Except for two books that go back a few centuries, all the finalists are 20th century history. If it’s not your wheelhouse, it’s not a good shortlist for you. For my part, I quite like it. I like recent history. My main beef with the choices is that most of them are giant bricks of 800 pages. Even if I just wanted to read the three finalists, there is no guarantee I would have time to read them before the winner is announced…

I really love Raymond Carver but he has a certain style that doesn't work for everyone. Telephone has 3 different versions and endings. The direction of the top compass and the dedication reveal which one you got. It's a sad novel.

Informative, thanks James. Me personally, I'm trying to move away from physical books as I want to minimize. When I do buy (physical or digital) books, I always wait for deep discounts as I've got a lot of unread books to read anyway. The Read What you Own challenge has helped with this. Lol, of course I recently picked up (for free!) the four volume set of _The Encyclopedia set of Philosophy_ , and the full set of _The Story of Civilization_ (Durant). I say I want to minimize, but I also dream of a Victorian library and when I see beautiful bound books (omg - for free!) that suit my reading style I cannot say no :)
